Phnom Penh Red Light District

Does Phnom Penh even have a Red Light District

Red Light District?

According to wikipedia a red light district is defined as:

A red-light district or pleasure district is a part of an urban area where a concentration of prostitution and sex-oriented businesses, such as sex shops, strip clubs, and adult theaters are found. Areas in many big cities around the world have acquired an international reputation as red-light districts.

So if you’re a westerner visiting Cambodia and expecting an Amsterdam experience you’ll be very disappointed. The bars that come closest to meeting this description are more often described as hostess bars in Phnom Penh and are even very tame compared to comparable venues in Thailand. Not that you should compare the 2 bar scenes as it’s as different as Canada and the USA are.

Pole Dancing in Phnom Penh

So if there’s not a red light district in Phnom Penh then what about pole dancing? Nope, there’s no pole dancing unless he’s had to much to drink. It was quite prevalent a few years ago but as with all “good” things they come to an end and a crack down by the anti-trafficking police resulted in most bars stopping the practice, those that didn’t chose the monopoly option – GO to Jail, DO NOT pass GO until you pay $200 or whatever it turned out to be. There’s a video of them dancing in 69 bar.

Artists impression of the staff at 69 bar. No really they did look like this 8 years ago.
